On this page of my blog, there's Production Inspiration from music videos with pictures of footage that I liked and explanations as to why I chose the video to analyse and information about what I like in the shot. There's also a Codes and Conventions section beneath my research, demonstrating what I have taken from each video and what I would like to recreate in my own music video.

Never Ending Song - Conan Gray
The song is about embracing the cyclical nature of life and relationships, even when messy or painful. The video is based off of his first date with a previous relation, spending time in Tesco while it rained outside. This idea itself could potentially resonate with audience as its a simple and relatable idea.
00:18 - Shopping Aisle Shot. This shot features some interesting camera angles to set the scene and allow the viewers to begin understanding the narrative. I like how the camera is positioned to create a long shot almost as if it was "never ending". I like the use of colour in the shelves and how the above light reflects down on the shop floor.
00:23 - Fridge Clip. This image doesn't capture the movement of this shot entirely but I think how the camera has been positioned here is really clever. It's very interesting in the sense that you can capture the actors face and movements from another angle other than the aisle. I like how the focus remains on the actor and their facial expressions and movements even though there is more to focus on in the shot.
00:44-00:49 - Till Beeping Noises. I like the use of sound to set the scene.
01:17-01:22 - Interesting Camera Movements. There are some quick spinning motions of the camera as the singer moves around. I would really like to recreate some of these movements because I want to have movements and transitions throughout my video.
Before You Go - Lewis Capaldi
Lewis Capaldi's music video features the love story and relationship dynamics of a woman with her partner and, what I assumed was, her younger sibling. The narrative is based around an African-American woman and her relationships before she passes away by suicide. She's presented in a fun, carefree and happy way, showing memories she shared with her family and friends. The video celebrates her life, portraying grief, regret and raw emotions. The use of low light and backlight portrays the less lively atmosphere while it symbolises the hope for a brighter future. The singer, Lewis Capaldi features in the video, lip syncing and playing his guitar, portraying his feeling through his singing.
Someone Like You - Adele
Adele's music video only features 2 shots with the camera man following beside her as she lip syncs, walking down the streets of Paris. The whole video is filmed and edited in black and white, potentially demonstrating her sadness and emphasising the idea of darkness and shadows and loneliness. We only see the silhouette of, what we assume is, the ex lover, conveying how he's already disappeared from her life or maybe illustrating how he's not as significant as the star Adele.
Undressed - Sombr
This pop ballad features themes of breakup, love and desire. The video features jumpy, chaotic visuals to present the idea of messy, chaotic feelings and thoughts. The colour changes from red to blue, showing a progression of feelings from love, lust and potential danger to something softer, sadder and more emotive. The use of natural lighting behind the subjects gives of a more heavenly and magical feel to the characters which I hope to recreate.
Thinkin' Out Loud - Ed Sheeran
Use of lighting. Choreography.
She Will Be Loved - Maroon 5
Flickering shots, overlaying of shots, consistent use of colour grading and atmosphere.
Every Breath You Take - The Police
Black and white to portray an eeriness. Lip syncing and laying instruments.
Somewhere Only We Know - Keane
Use of lighting. Narrative. Interesting angles and transitions.
It Will Be Okay - Shawn Mendes
Same scene used throughout. Same lighting - back light. Snow used to portray sad emotions.
Stay With Me - Sam Smith
Back lighting. Wash lighting. Narrative story line. Casual clothing to portray normality and realism.
Codes and Conventions of Music Videos
Mise en scene
Music videos use natural backlighting to portray a hopeful atmosphere using sun and shadows to their advantage. I want to recreate this hopeful feel near the end of my video. I also noticed that music videos use darker lighting to portray negative emotions and I want to recreate this to portray my artists sadness, loneliness and conflicting negative emotions. I want my Artists use of outfit to convey different messages. For example, Sam Smith uses casual clothes to present himself as ordinary and on the same level as the audience. I will dress my singer in three different outfits to demonstrate the difference between her reality, her isolation she feels and her dreams. Her everyday clothes, jeans, t-shirt, will be dark blue to represent the sadness and loneliness she feels in her reality meanwhile the hoodie is a literal symbolisim of isolation and the blue dress will symbolise her desire to feel pretty, carefree and dreamy while the light blue represents a symbol of hope. In the beginning of the video, I will use cards as props, specifically using the King cards to allude to Madison Beer's other song "King of Everything". I will use party props such as cups and plates and food to allow my audience to understand that the setting is a garden party. The location will change from the garden to the park and the street to the beach where she's dreaming about a better and carefree life without her loneliness and anxiety. The colour blue will be present throughout the video through props, outfits and settings to emphasis her representing with the sadness and simplicity of the colour blue.
Editing
I will use jumpy and overlapping clips throughout my video to present the messiness of her feelings. To further convey this idea, I want to use some kind of hazy effect on my clips and use slow-mos to emphasize her confusion and worry. I want to use transitions to make the video more aesthetically pleasing to watch and allow the video to flow.
Camera Movements
In some clips I will have a shaky camera as I follow my singer to further demonstrate fear, worry and confusion. I aim to follow my singer as she walks and runs around. I will use transitions and movements with my camera in a circular motion to emphasize the idea of "spinning".
Sound
I will use diegetic sound such as birds chirping, wind, talking and laughing at the beginning of my video to convey a sense of normality. Then the non-diegetic sound will begin to play in my singers head and she'll see that everybody ahs disappeared, conveying the idea that she's stuck inside her own head, feeling alone, presenting her metaphorical loneliness through the world inside her head.
Genre, Style, Messaging, Representation and Stereotyping
Music videos feature different genres to set the tone of the music and the atmosphere around the artist. I intend to use a fantasy narrative genre and style in my music video, using the lyrics to convey how the singer is stuck in her head, feeling alone and sad, while everyone has disappeared and the world around her has stopped "spinning". I will create messaging through use of camera movements and her character panicking to portray her building anxiety at the thought of being so alone. My character is a young teenage girl who suffers from depression, anxiety and loneliness but I aim to portray her as a typical teenage girl with a friend group, conveying the message that she appears like a "normal" teenage girl but has these feelings and mental health problems which can occur in anyone. I want to break the stereotype that teenage girls are "too emotional" or dramatic by presenting her as a reserved and closed off character who experiences emotions but doesn't always enjoy talking about them. The colour blue will be a prominent theme in the video, seen in her clothes, the props and the settings.
